Job Overview
The First Mate position includes various responsibilities from overseeing daily operations to supporting and training the Steward team. The Chief Steward reports to their Ship Captain.
As First Mate, they oversee & support the day-to-day operations and manage the crew during crossover periods. They ensure Stewards adhere to Othership policies and SOPs, and provide training and support, including new hire trainings, opening and closing procedures, and ongoing learning and development. The First Mate is tasked with developing and implementing new systems for operational efficiency and addressing immediate issues or conflicts within the team.
The First Mate is an individual who understands and embodies the Othership vision and core values. They are personable, highly professional, take initiative, are highly independent, and possess leadership qualities within their community.
The First Mate also acts as a steward advocate, reporting on Lead Stewards' feedback, supporting steward events, and assisting in Magic Moment trainings and escalation emails.
Key Responsibilities:
Shift Leadership:
- Oversee day-to-day operations and manage the Steward team during crossover periods.
- Ensure adherence to Othership policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Provide training and support to Stewards, including new hire training, opening and closing procedures, and spot quizzes.
- Develop and implement new systems for operational efficiency (e.g., lost and found, pool logging organization, journal changeover, inventory receiving, audits, checklists, and team huddles).
Performance Management:
- Provide direct feedback to the team with support from SC.
- Engage in ongoing coaching from SC and AM on performance conversations.
- Address and resolve immediate issues or conflicts within the team with support from SC or LG.
Support with Scheduling:
- Assist with creating the monthly Steward schedule.
- Approve shift swaps for Stewards.
Support with Inventory:
- Conduct monthly inventory counts with SC and report findings.
- Handle weekly ordering of supplies.
- Organize merchandise and communicate backstock needs to merch management.
FitGrid Wizard:
- Respond timely and thoughtfully to Journeyers.
- Escalate issues to SC and LG as needed.
- Document responses effectively and clearly.
- Adhere to SOP and train Lead Stewards for support.
Steward Advocate:
- Report on feedback regarding Lead Stewards.
- Support steward events and landings.
- Assist in Magic Moment trainings.
- Handle escalation emails in the Lead Steward inbox.
- Provide Brandbot SMS support.
- Monitor and lead Google Review sprints
Additional Responsibilities:
- Being the face of Othership by embodying our core values through communicating with enthusiasm, empathy, respect, and kindness to our journeyers and patrons, always with a consistent and strong expression of the highest customer service.
- Maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of the mission, core values, and culture of Othership, and upholding these in all interactions.
- As the onsite shift lead, offering clear communication and directives to fellow crew members, including stewards, guides, crewmates, and deckhands.
- Take a hands-on approach to troubleshooting and resolving minor repairs around the studio, ensuring equipment, fixtures, and facilities remain in optimal working condition to support seamless daily operations.
- Working directly with the Ship Captain, Lead Stewards, Partnerships Manager, and Social Media Manager to support events management, special projects and initiatives, marketing support, and social media support.
